Nestled in the heart of Omaha, Nebraska, The Union for Contemporary Art is doing more than just showcasing art, it’s creating opportunities for artists and inspiring the next generation of creative professionals. Through initiatives like the Inside/Outside Fellowship Program and its Youth Engagement and Neighborhood Arts projects, The Union is contributing to the city’s future by creating a sense of belonging and connection within its community.

“The Union’s Fellowship program gives local artists 11 months to dive into their creative practice by providing them a free studio space in our building,” said Harrison Martin, The Union’s Communications Director. “Fellows receive a $3,000 honorarium, $500 professional development funds, a Complimentary one-year Co-Op Studios Pass, and Critique sessions with arts and culture workers. This program is available to those in the Omaha Metro area and encourages artists to develop their creative practice in our city.” This commitment to supporting local artists is a key reason why Omaha is becoming a place where creative professionals can thrive.

Since its creation in 2012, the Inside/Outside Fellowship Program has welcomed 70 artists, providing them with the resources and community to take their work to the next level. The program not only supports artists in their creative journeys but also promotes a collaborative environment that encourages dialogue and inspiration.

“The reliability and longevity of this program helps promote Omaha as a place where local artists have opportunities to develop their art making with support,” Martin added.

The Union is also dedicated to engaging young people and uplifting the North Omaha community through its Youth Engagement and Neighborhood Arts initiatives. These programs, such as Art Club and Action Brigade, empower the youth to express themselves, develop artistic skills, and explore their identities. Martin reflected on the importance of these programs.

“By celebrating the unique perspectives of the community and offering a safe space for self-expression, The Union is helping to strengthen connections and foster a deeper sense of belonging within the community,” he said.

One of the standout success stories from these initiatives is Isabella Manhart, a former peer mentor who participated in The Union’s Mentoring Youth Artist program. Through this program, Isabella not only gained confidence and artistic skills but also developed and led a successful project called “Shadow Stories.” The project, which combines light boxes and cardboard cutouts to create a visually engaging storytelling experience, has become a community favorite, showcasing how the arts can inspire and engage others.

Martin believes that initiatives like these play a pivotal role in helping young people see Omaha as a place where they can build their futures.

“By working with teaching artists, creating public art, and seeing their work celebrated, youth realize they can make a real impact here. The Union also helps them take pride in North Omaha’s culture and history, showing them that their neighborhood is full of potential—and so are they,” Martin said.

As Omaha continues to grow as a home for creative professionals, The Union’s commitment to nurturing local talent and engaging with the community will undoubtedly continue to impact the city. Whether through providing space and resources for artists or offering mentorship and opportunities for the next generation, The Union is proving that Omaha is a place where creativity can thrive and inspire.

For those looking to work, live, and play in Nebraska, The Union of Contemporary Art is leading the way—proving that the “Good Life” is indeed calling.
