Why drive for hours to feel like you’ve escaped? In The Good Life, it’s just part of everyday life. With landscapes that range from wide-open prairies to towering buttes and shady pine forests, Nebraska is built for exploration.
Wander through the lunar-like formations of Toadstool Geological Park, where time and wind have sculpted an ancient, otherworldly terrain. Scotts Bluff National Monument rises boldly from the prairie, once a beacon for pioneers heading west — and now, a perfect place to hike, picnic and watch the sun set. Explore the winding Missouri River in Ponca State Park. Just outside of Alliance, NE, Chimney Rock National Historic Site stands tall as an unmistakable stone spire etched into migration lore and American memory.
Looking to get lost in the trees? The Nebraska National Forest offers trails and camping options for all skill levels. Sandy Channel State Recreation Area, Nebraska’s premier primitive campground, offers a great spot for casting a line and relaxing next to peaceful waters. You can chase waterfalls at Smith Falls or Platte River State Park, and hike over 100 miles of rugged trails at Chadron State Park. And when you’re ready to give your legs a rest, saddle up and explore the 22,000 acres of Fort Robinson State Park and its stunning Pine Ridge scenery and Old West stories.
If you’re into wildlife watching, the world’s largest gathering of sandhill cranes sweep through the skies along the Platte River near Gibbon and Wood River every March. And at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, bison still roam free.
You can even explore Nebraska’s wildlife management areas from your home by subscribing to Nebraska Game & Parks magazine, Nebraskaland. From ice fishing and hunting to birding and horseback riding, Nebraska’s wide-open spaces are yours to explore.
